REIs: Human Rights Education

Continuing the project of “Human Rights Education in Religious Education Institutes,” a five-day workshop was organised from March 16-20, 2008 for the teachers of REIs in order to engage them in the contemporary international debate of human rights.

Speakers: Maulana Zahid-ur-Rashdi, Chairman, Al-Shariah Academy, Gujranwala, Zafar-ul-Hassan Joya, Advocate, Mr. Mehboob Sada, DG Christian Study Centre, Rawalpindi, Prof. Amjad Ahmed, Lecturer, Department of Shariah and Law, IIUI, Prof Mushtaq, Associate Professor, Department of Shariah and Law, IIUI, Raja Muhammad Ishtiaq, Advocate were the resource persons.

Dr. Anis Ahmed, VC Riphah International University, Islamabad; Dr. Khalid Alvi, Dean of Arts and Humanitities, WISH University, Islamabad; Dr. Safeer Akhtar and Prof. Abdul Jabbar Shakir also spoke in the workshop.

Besides, Dr. Anis Ahmed, Dr. Khalid Alvi, Dr. Safeer Akhtar and Prof. Abdul Jabbar Shakir also spoke on the subject.

One of the most important aspects of this workshop was the range of activities carried out during 5 days. IPS took REIs teachers to visit Aurat Foundation, District Courts and Superintendent Police, Islamabad to give them an exposure and an opportunity to interact with different organisations and administrative system. They also worked together on internet for researching recent report on human rights from the US and UNO and its subsidiary organisations. They reviewed international human rights documents and presented their reports.

 While having a critical evaluation, they shared their views on some important human rights in the documents of international organisations and related them with the Islamic Shariah, taught in REIs. Prof. Khurshid Ahmed, Chairman IPS, was also present in the concluding session.

Earlier, IPS conducted two one-day consultative meetings with the religious scholars, belonging to five boards of REIs covering all schools of thought, educationists and people from relevant ministries on January 09, 2008 and Feb14, 2008.

The participants discussed various issues related to Human Rights education in general and introducing the subject at REIs in particular. An outline for syllabus for facilitating Human Rights in REIs was also presented. The participants gave their remarks, suggestions and recommendations to improve the outline. Ikram-ul-Haq and Abdullah Saifi coordinated the program.
