IPS Chairman Delivers Lecture on Poverty Alleviation in Islamic Framework

Sustainable poverty alleviation requires approaches that address not only the economic dimensions of poverty but also its broader social and ethical aspects. A values-based perspective rooted in the Islamic framework can complement conventional development approaches by offering principles aimed at addressing poverty on a sustainable basis.

This was discussed by Khalid Rahman, chairman, Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), during a special lecture titled “Poverty Alleviation on Sustainable Basis in the Islamic Framework” at the Akhtar Hameed Khan National Centre for Rural Development (AHKNCRD), Islamabad, on September 4, 2026.

The lecture was delivered as part of AHKNCRD’s five-day training course, “Poverty Alleviation: Challenges & Solutions,” held from August 31 to September 4. The course brought together senior and mid-level officers and officials from government, non-governmental, and academic sectors from across the country, with the objective of strengthening their understanding of poverty alleviation strategies and enhancing research capacity in the field.

During his lecture, Khalid Rahman explored the principles of sustainable poverty alleviation within the Islamic framework, presenting participants with a perspective grounded in Islamic values and its relevance to contemporary approaches to poverty reduction.

The session formed part of the training program’s broader focus on examining the challenges of poverty and possible solutions. The engagement provided participants an opportunity to consider poverty alleviation through an Islamic framework alongside conventional development approaches.

AHKNCRD is an attached department of the Establishment Division, Government of Pakistan, mandated to promote rural development through training and research programs for federal and provincial nation-building departments, local government bodies, and rural development NGOs and CBOs.
