New wave of reforms in China: A session with Prof. Xiao Jianming

chinatitleAn in house session on ‘New wave of Reforms in China” was held at the institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad on December 12, 2013. The event was addressed by Professor Xiao Jianming, a visiting scholar from China, while other speakers included DG-IPS Khalid Rahman and Lead Coordinator Irfan Shahzad.

Prof. Xiao Jianming said that China has reached at a very critical point in time where CPC, the ruling party of China, has proposed a new set of reforms to improve and develop socialism in the country with Chinese characteristics as well as to modernize country’s governing system and capabilities. In his introductory presentation, he highlighted number of steps recommended by CPC in the areas of economy, politics, culture, ecology, etc.

The detailed analysis by Professor Xiao Jianming underlined various aspects of proposed reforms such as the decisive role of market in resource allocation, improvement of price mechanism, cultivation of open market system, encouragement of private sector and foreign investments, speedy construction of free trade zones, innovation in production instead of duplication and imitation, tax reforms, land reforms, revision of HUKOI system, establishment of a modern cultural market system, development of ecological civilization system and improvements in education, employment, business, social welfare, health and medical systems.

IPS Lead Coordinator Irfan Shahzad also threw a light on the prevailing government systems in China and the challenges currently faced by them.

DG-IPS Khalid Rahman, in his concluding speech, emphasized on the importance of developing the understanding and increasing the cooperation between China and Pakistan.

A question answer session was also held at the end of the session.
