About the Book
One of the most important and fundamental values of Western civilization is the freedom of an individual. But in the last two decades, and in recent years in particular, the tendency of Western governments, institutions and some scholars regarding the hijab seems to contradict this value of the West itself.
As Muslim immigrants have turn to the West, the Western societies, intellectuals, and government laws have increasingly been taking a hard line against the hijab. However, there is a section in the West itself that is critical of this trend and the measures that point to it.
The scholarly articles in this collection examine Islamophobia, the veil, the hijab, and restrictions on the construction of mosque minarets in Western and some Muslim countries. These articles point out why the West continues to be confused about the hijab, despite the general concept of individual freedom? Also, what kind of problems the laws and administrative measures related to hijab in the Western countries are being caused to the Muslim citizens, immigrants and tourists of these countries. Adopting a secular interpretation under the influence of Western thought, some Muslim countries are also imposing restrictions on Muslim women in terms of dress and seemingly preferring secular values over Muslim society, culture and civilization.
This Western narrative can only be countered and refuted by its critique of the arguments of the Qur’an and Sunnah and the unforgivable narrative of Muslim sociologists. Unless Muslim scholars present their narratives on the basis of scientific arguments with an awareness of these ground realities, young Muslim men and women will be influenced by Western narratives and remain skeptical about their religion.
