Regional Mechanism for Cross-boundary Water Issues A Perspective

Regional Mechanism for Cross-boundary Water Issues A Perspective

Policy Perspectives, Volume 9 , Special issue on “China and SAARC” 2012

Abstract

[The unresolved issue of Kashmir between India and Pakistan is directly linked with the water flows of the rivers of Indus basin. The water related tension between the two countries remain a major threat to regional peace, besides adversely affecting the people of two countries in socio-economic sphere. The Indus Water Treaty is there for almost five decades and while it has prevented the water related tensions from growing into full grown conflict, it has not been able to resolve the outstanding water issues amicably. There are also cross-boundary water issues involving India and other countries of the region. A regional mechanism of negotiations on water issues may be a way forward in the long run. – Eds.]
