Pakistan’s Power Sector Challenges and the Way Forward

Policy Perspectives, Volume7 , Number2, July – December 2010

Abstract

[Power shortages in Pakistan have been cyclical, with the current cycle having its roots in 2004-05, the main reasons being the lack of planning and coordination, mismanagement and high rate wastages. The demand could not be forecasted correctly keeping in view the rising population and economic growth. No new investments were made in the hydro-power generation after 1970s, and potential of coal reserves remained untapped. The shortfall could go up to 13,000 Mega watts by year 2020, if drastic step are not taken. This article, while giving an overview of the existing players in the sector, attempts to analyze the causes of the ongoing crisis and also puts forward suggestions aimed at coming out of this worrisome situation. – Eds.]
