Dr Farhat Taj, Social Policy Expert
Dr Farhat Taj is a seasoned academic and social policy expert with extensive experience in social work, state welfare systems, and the sociology of law. She earned her interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Sociology of Law from the University of Oslo in 2013, focusing on the intersection of law, society, and human rights.
Currently serving as Associate Professor at the University of Tromsø, Norway, Dr Taj leads major research initiatives including VEIBIE (Welfare, Technology & Law) and IDMC (Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre) projects. Her research particularly emphasizes conflict-induced internal displacement, local conflict dynamics, human rights, and humanitarian assistance.
Dr Taj has authored over 18 research publications exploring critical themes such as legal pluralism and Islam in Norway, migration and religion in Europe, and the local adoption of universal human rights norms. Her scholarship offers valuable insights into how legal and welfare frameworks interact with cultural and religious contexts in both Europe and South Asia.
She is widely recognized for her work at the intersection of social justice, legal adaptation, and minority rights, and continues to contribute to both academic discourse and practical policy development in these areas.
