Dr Ashraf Ali, Security and Political Analyst

Ashraf Ali is an experienced political and security analyst with deep expertise in the dynamics of conflict, governance, and socio-political transformation in Pakistan’s tribal regions and along the Afghanistan border. With over 25 years of professional experience in journalism, mass communication, and research, he has become a leading voice on issues related to violent extremism, regional security, and political development.

Ashraf has conducted and led numerous ground-level research studies in the conflict-prone tribal areas of Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, focusing on the roots of militancy, socio-economic challenges, and the evolving political landscape. His analytical insights are widely sought after in both academic and policy-making circles.

He serves as a Media Consultant with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supporting initiatives aimed at mainstreaming the formerly war-affected FATA region into Pakistan’s national governance and development framework. He is also the Executive Director of Zalan Communications, an Islamabad-based research and media organization.

Previously, Ashraf worked with the BBC World Service for 17 years, where he honed his expertise in international media and political reporting. In 2009, he established the FATA Research Centre, serving as its founding president, and played a key role in shaping discourse on security and governance in Pakistan’s tribal belt.

His analysis and commentaries are regularly published in leading national dailies such as The News and The Nation, where he writes extensively on security policy, political affairs, and governance challenges.
