While ensuring sustainable and affordable energy supplies, coal is considered one of the cheapest sources of electricity generation. Ranked among the largest reservoirs of coal in the world, the utilization of Thar coal has remained one of the least focused areas in the country. An initiative for the development of Thar coal was taken decades after its discovery, the progress on the matter however has been very slow. Another initiative of Gadani Power Park, which is based on imported coal, is also in progress.

In the given background, IPS is organizing a seminar titled, “Coal: from Thar to Gadani” on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at IPS Seminar Hall at 11:00 am. The seminar seeks to discuss the potential and prospects of Thar coal while identifying the infrastructural, technical, financial, and environmental issues associated with it. The purpose of the seminar is to come up with policy measures and recommendations to exploit the reservoir’s potential to the best possible extent.
