America at 250: Gains and Losses
The IPS Insight evaluates the United States’ 250-year journey by balancing its major achievements with its enduring shortcomings. It argues that America’s greatest strengths lie in its constitutional continuity, strong institutions, scientific and technological leadership, economic power, and ability to attract global talent, while highlighting persistent challenges such as slavery’s legacy, military interventions, political polarization, economic inequality, and declining public trust in democratic institutions. The paper concludes by asking whether, after 250 years, the United States can continue to serve not only as a global power but also as a beacon of hope and opportunity for the world.
