The
Islamic State in the Contemporary
International Scenario
Mahmood Ahmad Ghazi
Abstract
[In exploring the nature of the Islamic state in
the contemporary international scenario, this paper first addresses the
basic and most fundamental question: what is the primary social and
collective demand of Islam from the Muslims living in countries where
they constitute a clear majority? Next, the Islamic concept of state is
briefly compared with other notions of state prevalent in the
contemporary world. The basic features that distinguish the Islamic
state from other political organizations and institutions are then
outlined. Finally, the paper discusses briefly the modalities of
realizing the ideal of an Islamic state as a practical reality in the
modern world, with particular reference to Pakistan, the case of which
has been raised time and again by many observers. – Author]
