The US Greater Middle East InitiativeBakhtiyar Mirkasymov
Abstract [The US “Greater Middle East Initiative” (GMEI) is a plan to transform the Muslim countries of the Middle East into democratic, secular and well-informed societies. The plan includes mainly three areas of reform: promoting democracy and good governance, providing economic opportunities and disseminating knowledge in the society. This paper is an effort to analyze the real objectives of the US initiative, the US lobbying its allies and partners to support its initiative and the reaction and response from G8, NATO and EU. On the other hand, the paper also dilates on the responses of Russia and China to this initiative. Lastly, the paper analyses the dilemma that the US is facing for implementing its initiative and its future dispensation. – Author]
